Madagascar has six public universities based in each of the capitals of the former provinces.

Short story :
After the independence of Madagascar in 1960, the University of Antananarivo was created and remained the only Malagasy university institution until 1988.
In 1977, in each capital of the six provinces of Madagascar, a Regional University Center (CUR). All six CURs formed the University of Madagascar.
Since October 7, 1988, each of the six CURs has been elevated to the rank of autonomous and independent university.
